The Portuguese Collage Artist Explores Alternate Realities
04/2016 visual culture
Artist Hugo Barros had never meant to be a collage artist. Trained as a painter, he found himself unable to buy new painting supplies after spending his last euro on vintage magazines in a second-hand market seven years ago. Since then, Barros has been peddling his collages throughout Portugal and on the internet. Hand-cut, each piece exists as a world of its own: As his scenes fold upon themselves at 90-degree angles, Barros brings new perspectives with an absurdist twist to the forefront.
Barros is one of the many talented artists who are breathing a new life into collaging. Meet the new generation of artists in our book The Age of Collage.
