Minor Moments in the Urban Jungle

Coincidences by Jonathan Higbee

visual culture

Amidst the rush of inner-city life, there are quiet coincidences at which too few people marvel. Photographer Jonathan Higbee captures these moments in his body of work. His images exist as the perfunctory example of what people mean when they discuss photography as the act of freezing a single frame: with each snapshot, he captures a dialogue between moving subjects and static backgrounds as they align perfectly. These conversations only existed in the wild for fractions of a second, but they’re immortalized in each one of Higbee’s photographs. “What are the stories that we, the photographers, make up about unfamiliar subjects in our images,” he asks in his artist’s statement. “How apart are the realities that we imagine for them–and then capture for eternity– from the truth?”
