Watch Landscapes and Lights Bloom in these Time-Lapse Animations

Time in Motion by Fong Qi Wei

The words used to describe natural light are often some of the most beautiful: soft morning light; dusky blue; golden hour. For photographer Fong Qi Wei, these levels and shades offer a toolkit of shades and hues with which he plays. In his Time in Motion series, the Singapore-based artist took photographs of different landmarks and buildings at different points of the day to record each site in gold, red, blue, and everything in between. He then drew geometric stencils across the common scene and created layered animations in which the rainbow of tones radiate out from a central point. Though looping in under a second, each animation offers a unique impression of the day coming and going simultaneously.

For infographic designer Nicholas Felton, projects like Time in Motion offer a look into data visualization via photography—or PhotoViz, as Felton says. To see more examples, browse our new book PhotoViz.
