Kentaro Poteliakhoff has taken the concept of Victorian opulence very much to heart. The walls in his four-story home are painted in fondant pastels, with names like “Bakelite green” and “coconut-ice pink.” Kentaro’s apartment is featured in Living to the Max by gestalten.
The styling in this apartment by Misha Kahn not only attempts to push the boundaries of maximalism to the next level, at times it succeeds. A graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, Minnesota-born Kahn is known for an experimental approach to furniture and lighting design with which he reinvents established techniques, often incorporating found materials and refuse, to create pieces that are outlandish in both form and function. Von Teese grew up watching 1940s movies with her mother and has cultivated a look for herself that is infused with classic Hollywood style—red lipstick, blue-black immaculately coifed hair, and a beauty mark tattooed near her left eye. This house is the epitome of New York Chic. In Jonathan Adler’s New York apartment, carefully curated furnishings, bold in both shape and color, are enclosed by brilliant white walls, creating spaces of the utmost sophistication. A successful home furnishings designer and stylist, Adler lives here with his partner Simon Doonan.
Time and again, Adler proves his mastery of interior design as he pairs decorative items with furnishings, matching them in color and form. Take the ensemble in the foyer, for example: here, a 1950s-style side board designed by Adler has a golden front carved with organic shapes that are echoed in the golden lamp and ornaments arranged on top. In this apartment designed by Misha Kahn, the scenes are fantastical to say the least. In the bedroom, gilded wall sconces reminiscent of an angel’s wings are mounted either side of a bed with a headboard fashioned from colorful fabric remnants, and a full-size toy sheep stands on a grass-green rug. In the dining area, a pair of rainbow-colored chairs by Katie Stout face each other across a table designed by Gaetano Pesce, the top of which is shaped like a map of Denmark.
Multilayering, a bold palette, clashing styles, and the mantra “more is more” are all common themes of the maximalist decorative style. As you turn the following pages, you will be treated to a visual feast of interiors in which barely a surface is clear of texture, pattern, color, or ornament.
