Over the last century, musicians, actors, artists, authors, and activists have used clothes to cultivate a defiant posture in the public eye. Style icons like Marlon Brando, James Dean, Miles Davis, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, and Steve McQueen turned the fashion world on its head by endowing particular clothes with new symbolism and meaning, especially with a sense of “cool.” A wide range of subcultures emulated the new styles, and what was once considered radical, in time became mainstream.

The T-shirt is so firmly ensconced in the modern wardrobe that it’s easy to forget there was a time when baring one’s arms was a transgressive act. Thanks to both servicemen and silver-screen icons, the simple white tee crossed the boundary from underwear to outerwear, becoming an essential part of the modern man’s wardrobe.
Though it may be tinged with nostalgia, the combat-ready A-2 is as imperishable and commanding today as when it first appeared. It refuses to fade away. World War II prompted the military to outfit its fighting personnel in highly functional, durable, and well-proportioned outerwear.

There is an irony attached to the Harrington: somehow this coat, which defined 1950s conformism, found its way into the closets of nonconformists. Each of them—mods, skinheads, punks, and hipsters— adopted the coat as a form of rebellion against everything the Harrington seemed to stand for.

Long before the turtleneck became a powerful symbol of radicalism, it was an old standby for fishermen, particularly in Guernsey, a small island in the English Channel, where the knitted sweaters continue to be made. The pattern is simple, allowing the sweater to be worn either backwards or forwards. Ganseys, as they came to be called, had a high neck, three-quarter length sleeves, and a diamond-shaped gusset in the armpit that allowed the arms to move freely in spite of the sweater’s tight fit.
Friend to the seafarer, the chunky and oversized sweater from Galway Bay was the fisherman’s Sunday best. This fascinating piece of clothe is also featured in The Rebel’s wardrobe.
