POP: A Visual History

A large-format, image-driven Wimmelbuch exploring 100 years of pop culture from the 1920s to today. Each decade unfolds as dense double spreads, filled with iconic objects, characters, fashions, music, design, and everyday scenes. The book encourages physical interaction: lingering, pointing, tracing, comparing, and discovering details over time. In addition, each decade is contextualized on extra double-page spreads through text and selected illustrations from the hidden-picture scenes. This provides a light yet expert overview, allowing readers to rediscover unknown or forgotten details.

Dr. Annekathrin Kohout is a cultural scientist and freelance author. She is the co-editor of the book series Digitale Bildkulturen (Wagenbach) and the magazine "POP." As a non-fiction author, she writes about internet culture, nerds, and K-Pop. In addition to teaching at various universities, she is active in international boards, including the Goethe-Institut and AICA. Pop: A Visual History is her first Children's Book.

Yayo Kawamura was born in South Germany in 1967, grew up in Tokyo, and has lived in Berlin since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. She studied communication design and has been working as a freelance illustrator and designer in her studio in Kreuzberg since 2001. Yayo Kawamura has designed numerous picture books and developed series for the youngest readers.
