The Ideal City

Exploring Urban Futures

The perfect city is yet to be built, but through collective actions the next generation could have it in sight.

Urban life is humankind’s biggest experiment to date, our cities are constantly evolving and adapting to climate and economy. The cities we have today are not necessarily the ones we need, but big and small innovation is rethinking visions of urbanization. Together with pioneering research and design agency SPACE10, we present future-orientated design which enhances quality of life and makes our urban spaces more vibrant.

As technology and urban life edge ever closer, The Ideal City explores the ambitious actions and initiatives being brought to life across the globe to meet tomorrow’s demand in clever, forwarding-thinking ways. From pedestrian infrastructure to housing, the book uncovers what is being discussed at the forefront of urbanism through expert essays and profiles.

What People Say

"While acknowledging that utopia doesn’t exist, and that top-down urban planning isn’t necessarily the right approach, Space10 puts forth a number of ways to improve existing cities and create new building models for undeveloped areas. The book (...) features projects from 53 cities around the world that offer solutions to some of the most pressing problems facing urban areas today."

Architectural Digest

"The Ideal City takes a hopeful approach at a time when people around the world are thinking about reemerging from their homes and returning to the cities they left behind"

Forbes

"stories of visionary innovation and hope-stirring wisdom from architects, designers, entrepreneurs and community leaders about game-changing projects (...) demonstrating design’s power to improve the wellbeing of people and planet on a daily basis and for generations to come."

Condé Nast Traveller

"Throughout hopeful pages, we’re reminded that the future of cities will not be shaped by governments, policy-makers, architects or urban designers, but by the coming together of millions of engaged citizens who buoy up their communities in a patchwork of solutions that will keep us afloat."

ICON

"the thrust of the book is to capture urban projects that are striving to make a difference, gently but inexorably steering towards the impossible goal of ‘utopia’. As a result, there’s a welcome thread of positivity running through the pages (...) You’ll come away from these pages realising that although design leadership is never in question, what’s needed most is political will."
