Reimagining High-End Fashion as Supermarket Chic

A fashion designer’s glossary is as wide as it is precise: tight silhouetting, faint periwinkle tubing, and layered denim fringe all hit the ear naturally to a catwalk regular. The world of fashion is ripe with rich textures, colors, and shapes. Artist mise en carefully studied the SS16 and AW16 runway looks of fashion-world favorites like Vetements, Comme des Garçon, and Gucci. She then recreated a selection of looks using pedestrian objects—rubber gloves, melting candles, and sausages included—to create analogous still-life sculptures for AnOther magazine that explore texture, shape, form, color, and composition.

mise en, also known as Marie Valognes, is one of the many artists, photographers, and set designers using the classic still-life trope to create fascinating pieces. See more from creatives around the world in our book The Still Life.
